Going to say it again and I know it is upsetting to the Pan-African characters but African-Americans are more aligned with emerging Asian economies than any other culture/group in the world. Our people ain’t some third world ish up in Latin America or Africa nor we ain’t nothing like European either except sellout cats wanting to pretend they are. We African-Americans have education , socio-economic status, high density communities and opportunity for self-empowerment growth on par with the most competitive Asian countries in this world.
Look, don’t get the message twisted about us being like Asians – no one is telling you cats to go out and buy Kyary Paymu Paymu Revolution, even though I bought it and love her album. I’m not telling you cats to run out and date someone Asian, even though I have. Nor am I’m telling you to watch their shows or movies but I love watching Korean dramas on Netflix and Hulu. What I’m telling you cats is we brothas and sistas need to look globally outside these bigoted, war-mongering, dumbed down United States of America and look for solutions that are aligned with our real situation in the hood.
One of the things the Japanese and Chinese and now the rest of the Asian Pacific Rim has done so well was they were able to take some of the best ideas around the industrialized world and apply it to their local hustle go become a global competitive force. Asian First World such as China and Taiwan and Japan nations incorporated the best of STEM such as quality assurance methodology in mass production and only focused on what everybody else succeeded at such as making electronics and focused solely on being better on what was already the best out there.
This is the purpose of this article – we brothas and sistas are now going to look at Asia and see what they done so well and bring it our way and see if we can make something out of it. The funny part is Asia is doing things we brothas and sistas used to do but not anymore. Here are some of the things in Asia that I think we brothas and sistas should look at incorporating into our hustles to create economic power locally and internationally to create the empire our urban communities are designed to sustain.
Personification in Marketing Communication
Personification is creating fictional characters in the form of anime drawings of cute animal or characters to represent everyday people. Personification also utilized attractive faces of models to represent a product and it is a very powerful marketing tool. We used to do this in the 70s and early 80s when we had these cool looking Black models posing for liquor and beer posters and in Black magazines from that era but we never brought this technique to market mainstream products.
In Asia, you cannot help but see this being done all over the place, especially over in Akihabara area around Tokyo. The problem and opportunity I see right now in the Black community is we got a lot of butt models in Model Mayhem but most of them are really good enough to be used in personification advertising. If you really think about it that is exactly how Kyary Paymu Paymu is doing her thing where she took it up a notch from being a model to a personification of various Japanese products.
What makes personification very effective and important to the Black community is we get to see an real Black person image of ourselves in our commercial districts and personification creates a personal communication with consumers who view the ad.
This is why you see larger than life images of Asian faces associated with products in billboards because it is a sense of pride to see people who look like you. Right now, in our community, we let outsiders present this Caucasian-friendly or negative stereotype image of Black people that do not reflect us and this is why the Black community should re-introduce personification that is being done over in Asia.
Bonus: Many of you may remember when we were in Tokyo, we found this bottled water for sale – this is a perfect example of personification being done overseas but not here in America. This is exactly what I’m trying to explain to yall what we need to do in our marketing material…
This is my personal mission once the paper gets up is to get these large screens in the hood to help boost commercial centers as soon as the money stack up our way, meaning this will happen. The role of these big jumbo screens was originally for Japanese TV manufacturers to show they have the biggest screens bigger than American television firms. But what these screens can be used for is social viewing in a public area and also promotes local business in the local area.
This is the importance of why I say IPTV is important and here is another thing to keep in mind – we can use the 80 inch screens effectively and also use projects with 200 inch viewing in some cases against a special kind of film called projection film to produce these types of videos. I believe these videos draw crowds to an area and the more people, the more customers and more money is poured into the local economy and jobs and tax base is created for that hood area.
Keep in mind that we also need media content for these jumbo screens and that is a whole level of creating media for the jumbo screens. These videos are usually short under 15 seconds and promote a local business, a movie or entertainment venue coming to town, consumer products or may show something entertainment or informing.
QR Code Wall Posters
These QR code posters works in high density areas such as places where a lot of people gather. The person scans the QR code, it goes to a mobile e-commerce web site where they can order a product or reserve something for pickup and checkout on their mobile phone. The order is sent to the business and when the customer goes into the store and shows a confirmation code, and then a business transaction is finalized.
If there is an African-American walking about talking about they broke, they are f*cking stupid because this QR code wall poster is one of the cheapest, most promising and effective business model ever published on Dream and Hustle. You can put QR code posters in the laundromat in the hood, at the auto maintenance shop in the hood, at the hair salon in the hood. The most lucrative hustle is to have cats pay you to create these QR code posters and we spoke on this before on this blog.
Some sista can sell her own labeled line of women sport tees from a QR code poster in the hair salon or can sell hair weave out of the nightclub women’s bathroom with a QR poster on the wall. It is a lot easier to build a web site that works with the mobile phone that can do end-to-end transaction. This mobile ordering is already done in Asia and we brothas and sistas should definitely take of this like yesterday and ish. I already created code that does this last year when I was running the kiosk and will be releasing it soon for brothas and sistas to implement.
Relaxation lounges are basically luxurious or active suites that you can rent by the hour as a place to chill out or be by yourself. In a busy city like Tokyo where people work hard and play hard and don’t feel like rushing home just to arrive at night to just eat and wake up the next day, relaxation lounges are nice getaways they can escape and basically, relax.
I’ve seen two types of relaxation lounges, the first is the one that let you take a shower, freshen up and watch TV like a nice suite and also a place to enjoy private company or social gathering away from the small Tokyo living spaces. The second type of relaxation lounge is more like an upscale video/entertainment center for dudes to play video games on a large screen TV or rock out to a nice stereo system or just sit back and relax.
When I saw these relaxation lounges, I couldn’t help but realize the obvious. The obvious was why the f*ck someone didn’t bring this model back to the hood! This is like going to a nice lounge but instead of dealing around other clown ass fronting people, you either chilling by yourself or you with a few friends and dates from the job or the other job in the building and stuff like that mingling and having fun! The hood definitely needs this because nightclubs are nothing but fronting and fighting nowadays in the Black community.
As one of the readers stated when we talked about starting up a host club in the hood, cats who came out of prison are straight slipping so damn hard not starting up one of these models. These Black chicks always talking about they love these thugs and these non-Black women always want to have these Mandingo parties and ish, then damn – do you need more explanation why cats can bring a host club filled with brothas to the states?
You don’t need some massage license or a strip club license, you just sitting there being in their company and just listening to these women run their mouth. And we know sistas love to run their mouth when they think we men are listening and you charge them by the hour or charge them to pop bottles with the brothas, that’s a stream of profits right there. If I can get $15 an hour to listen to a chick run her damn mouth versus going to some cornball club trying to holla at these stuck up chicks, it ain’t even a debate on which route I will go.
The most important thing I come to realize about host club is the same thing I come to realize about a good bartender, people come to talk to someone. It ain’t about sex and the best paid strippers in the industry make their money just listening to dudes talk and I know chicks at upscale gentlemen clubs doing $200K – $300K just talking and dancing in front of cats and I know chicks making around $40K a year grinding her butt on cheap ass brothas d*cks all night long. It ain’t about sex – it’s about conversation and sitting down and talking and listening – something the Black entertainment industry haven’t figured out yet.
I spoke about these photo booths before in a previous article but what makes them fun is they are stuff that teen girls like to go out and do. Now, I want you to notice something in the video above – do you see all of the personification that we spoke about in the first part of this article? Notice how the sista keep showing the one booth that has Kyary predecessor, Masuwaka Tsubasa as the personification icon and speaking of her, let’s to go to the next topic.
Cosplay of Weaves and Eye Lashes Products
Sistas need to personify the weave and eye lashes in the same manner it is being done in Japan. Dolly Wink with Masuwaka Tsubasa is the perfect example that I hope sistas get a clue that they should do this in America to promote their brand. This is the one thing I want sistas to get in their head – you can cosplay your look instead of trying to get some attractive model.
Cosplay is a Japanese practice that means “costume play” of putting on makeup, costumes to have a different look and is the form of personification practiced in Asian, dating back to their art performances in the 12th century. You sistas do not need to look regular when selling hair weaves and lashes and can incorporate cosplay to promote personification in a way that stands your product out from the others.
Night markets are done in Southeast Asian and are late night marketplaces where you can go strolling and shopping and eating and this is done late at night. Here is a little fact that America don’t want to admit – the safest places in America as well as the world are 24/7 cities that are just as active at night as they are in the day. Our hoods are extremely dangerous when everything is closed at night but night markets would actually change that around, but our politicians and others are on some ignorance assumptions and beliefs.
The best ways to describe night markets are basically flea markets or swap meets that are done in the middle of the night. Or you taking a date to the traveling carnival in your town and yall hanging out at night walking around before getting on rides. Look, everybody don’t go to bed at night and a lot of people including restless kids would love to go out and enjoy a night without doing anything crazy or expensive and that’s where these night markets can be a viable solution.
The last and my favorite practice from Asia we brothas and sistas should definitely keep in mind is clustering – putting all of the same businesses in one concentrated area. In the video above is a street in Mong Kok, Hong Kong where the whole street dedicated to aquatic pets. For years, Black Enterprise magazine been telling the Black community some bullshit about brothas and sistas should not open up the same kind of business next to each other and be different and that’s is the stupidest thing I ever heard. And most of yall actually believe that ignorant crap and didn’t realize that whole statement was designed to keep us brothas and sistas from building an empire.
Madison Ave is a cluster of ad agencies, Silicon Valley is a cluster of startups, Bangalore is a cluster of call centers, Ft. Lauderdale is a cluster of ultra-luxury cars, Hollywood is a cluster of film studios but your Black ass was taught not to build the same kind of business in your community next to each other. What happens when you build next to each other is all of you begin to compete and innovate and all of you cats step you game up. And the customer wins by going to a place where everybody stepped their game up competing with each other.
Black folks right now can start up a street that sell nothing but auto accessories, where shops are selling rims and chromes and rag tops and so on. All of these businesses will up the ante and you will see storefronts trying to outshine each other, cats offering the latest and greatest and the prices will be aggressive and you as a customer will know this is the spot to go for your auto hookup and tell other cats. Then cats from all over know this this the spot and everybody in that area will be getting paid! That’s how you do Black business together and build an empire!
Brothas and sistas should always go where the money is at and the money is in Asia right now. We should realize they have similar traits as we do in terms of how our culture is structured and realize there are elements we can borrow from them and apply to our own communities. The days of this cornball Pan-African pride filled with anachronism pseudo-beliefs about our people and culture are over and we need to be like Soul II Soul and get back to reality.
Stevie Wonder goes to Japan to sing he song Isn’t She Lovely back in 1990:
Now today, a Japanese artist, Kyuhyun goes to Paris to sing Isn’t She Lovely in 2012:
If you didn’t realize by now, Asia cats were influenced by us for the longest time, including our music, fashion, civil rights and revolutionary style of thinking. But the interesting thing is they retained most of our hustles and ways over the decades while we African-Americans didn’t past down this knowledge down to our generations. But the good thing is we can extract not only some of the lost knowledge, but things they are doing over there that is compatible with where African-Americans need to go in terms of economic development and global competitiveness.
